SPOKANE, Wash. – Hundreds of churchgoers in Spokane gathered for the annual National Day of Service and Remembrance on September 11. They focused on cleaning and maintaining local cemeteries and playgrounds.
The National Day of Service encourages Americans to transform the events of 9/11 into an opportunity to give back to their communities. Volunteers engaged in various activities, including cleaning headstones, picking up debris, mowing and repainting a faded cemetery sign.
Jay Kessler, a traffic coordinator, shared his thoughts on the day's efforts.
"Doing service work is... it makes you feel great... and with all the discord in the world this is a great thing to do to make us feel good," he said.
At the cemetery on Dishman-Mica, 107 cars filled with people arrived to participate in
