PHOENIX — A man died in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Arizona, according to information from the agency.

Lorenzo Antonio Batrez Vargas, a 32-year-old citizen of Mexico, was pronounced dead on Aug. 31, officials said. The cause of his death is not known at this time.

“I am heartbroken to learn that another life has been lost in an ICE detention facility," Arizona Senator Theresa Hatathlie said. "The treatment of individuals in these facilities raises serious concerns about the humanity and accountability of ICE operations. Families and communities deserve answers.”

Vargas was arrested in Flagstaff on Aug. 2, and was facing charges of possession/use of drug paraphernalia. Enforcement and Removal Operations teams took him into custody and transferred him to be
