The NSW government is putting the brakes on its planned trial to remove shark nets from certain beaches in three Sydney council areas.

The decision comes just a day after 57-year-old Mercury Psillakis was killed by a shark at Long Reef Beach, with Premier Chris Minns branding it as "the right thing to do" after the "terrible event".

The fatal attack took place at a netted beach.

Waverley, Northern Beaches and Central Coast councils had all been in talks with the government over the past few months regarding the trial.

"The truth of the matter is we haven't settled on the location or technology that would replace nets," Mr Minns said.

"So 51 nets rolled out on the 1st of September."

He added that a decision on the trial's rollout would now need to wait until there was more information
