So much for the slow season in golf.

Rory McIlroy holed a dramatic 28-foot eagle putt on the final hole to force a playoff, then went on to top Joakim Lagergren at K Club, capturing the Amgen Irish Open in thrilling fashion.

Lagergren led by two as McIlroy approached the 18th hole, thanks to an eagle of his own on the 16th hole. The Swede finished the day with a round of 66 and had a chance to effectively close the door on McIroy, but missed an eagle putt of his own on the 18th, giving the world's No. 2 player a glimmer of hope.

That set up one of the season's most electric moments, as the crowd erupted when McIlroy dropped the tying putt.

The two players then battled through a pair of playoff holes, but on the third hole McIlroy took advantage of a Lagergren mistake to capture the title.

McIlroy, who was playing his first Irish Open since winning the Masters in April and completing the career Grand Slam, was clearly moved by the victory and the support he received.

"I just feel so lucky that I get to do this in front of these people," McIlroy said. "The support has been amazing all week. So happy I could play the way I did this week and get the win."

Angel Hidalgo, who came up just short of making DP World Tour history on Saturday with a third-round 63 that featured 12 birdies, tying for the most over 18 holes on the circuit, finished tied for third with Rafa Cabrera-Bello at 15 under.

Cabrera-Bello had a putt on the final hole to get into a temporary tie for the lead, but left it on the side of the cup.
