The 2025 MTV Video Music Awards are airing live TONIGHT!

Ever since the first VMAs aired over 40 years ago in 1984, the trophy given out the winners has been called a Moonman.

However, in 2017, MTV decided to rename the trophy to “Moon Person.”

In an interview, The New York Times , Chris McCarthy , who was the president of MTV at the time, explained that the decision to change the name was to make the awards show more inclusive and gender-free.

“Why should it be a man? It could be a man, it could be a woman, it could be transgender, it could be nonconformist,” Chris said at the time.

Also in 2017, MTV got rid gendered categories at the VMAs and at the Movie Awards .
