BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - The winter season can pose challenges for farmers and horse owners if they don’t have a large enough hay supply.
Extension Horse Specialist at the University of Kentucky, Bob Coleman, has some tips to help avoid a limited supply.
Coleman’s first tips is to make sure the timing is right when starting to grow hay.
“We’re trying to time when we can put the crop down, have it dry so that we can then harvest it, bale it and get it into the storage area so that we have protected the quality of that hay,” said Coleman.
While the quantity of the hay is important so is the quality, as it’s crucial to understand the nutrient profile and what the horse is obtaining from feeding.
