A major sub-plot of Liverpool’s Premier League title-winning story last season was a chapter which came to be referred to as the “Anfield contract saga” involving three star players.

It was a diversion in which Arne Slot’s side completed notable tasks like beating the Spanish, German and then English champions, only to discover this was broadly considered of secondary importance because Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold had not signed new deals.
