Dear Reader: It’s not a question of if, but when, your emotions emerge, how can you keep calm and carry on?

If you’ve ever lost control of your emotions at work, you’re not alone. According to an Accountemps survey, approximately 45% of respondents said they cried at work. Similarly, 44% of CFOs said crying is acceptable at work; that is, if it’s not on a daily basis.

While crying is more overt, there are more subtle ways your emotions may be overtaking your performance. “‘Emotional leaks’ are subtle drains on energy and focus,” said Marc Brackett, Ph.D., founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, and author of “Dealing With Feeling: Use Your Emotions to Create the Life You Want.”
