Western Pennsylvania farmers are recovering from the whiplash of a season that saw drastic shifts in the weather pattern.

Turbulent conditions left them feeling frustrated, from the seemingly constant heavy downpours early in the summer to a dearth of rain as the season wore on.

“Weather is probably what I lose the most sleep over,” said Adam Voll, a farmer at Soergel Orchards in Franklin Park. “It’s the one thing I can’t control.”

Meteorological summer — the period from June 1 to Aug. 31 that forecasters use to mark the season and which differs from the calendar’s changing of seasons — was indeed a roller coaster.
