State planners have approved a pod-style Urban Haven hotel on Fremantle’s iconic cappuccino strip.

The plans require the demolition of the heritage-listed building which currently houses Sailing for Oranges and the Fremantle Comedy club to make way for Patrick Prendiville’s new Urban hotel.

The Metro Inner Development Assessment Panel voted unanimously in support of the project at its June 25 meeting.

Presiding member Clayton Higham said he “wholeheartedly” supported the proposal.

“I think this is a wonderful development in a perfect location and is a perfect use of the land,” he said.

Specialist DAP member John Syme said he remembered when the South Terrace site was previously developed, noting that it never quite “fit” the area and praised the architecture’s “very strong facade”.
