At least 14 people have died and many others have been injured during violent protests in Kathmandu. The demonstrations erupted in response to allegations of government corruption and a recent ban on social media platforms. State television reported that police used live ammunition, tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets as thousands of young protesters attempted to breach the parliament building.
Protesters managed to push through barbed wire and overwhelmed riot police, forcing them to retreat into the parliament complex. As the situation escalated, police eventually opened fire to regain control. The army has been deployed to assist, and a curfew has been imposed around the Prime Minister's residence and other government areas.
The unrest follows Nepal's decision last week to block access to social media platforms, including Facebook. This action was taken after these companies failed to register with the government amid a crackdown on alleged misuse of social media. Protesters voiced their demands, chanting, "Stop the ban on social media, stop corruption not social media," while waving the national flags in red and blue.
