Known for wearing Hawaiian shirts on the sidelines, National Junior College Athletic Association Hall of Fame coach Sonny Lewis’ illustrious 24-year career came to a close with his Aug. 26 retirement announcement.
Lewis compiled an 807-240 overall record and took Owens Community College to dynastic heights, winning three NJCAA National Championships and 19 conference titles.
He is a 12-time Ohio Community College Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and four-time National Coach of the Year. Owens also renamed its annual volleyball tournament to the ‘Sonny Lewis Classic’, as stated in a news release published by the school.
Prior to leading the Express, Lewis coached at Springfield High School (1979-2000), where he had 373 wins and was inducted into the Ohio High School Volleyball Coach
