The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) will have up to $394 million for daily operations after the transportation secretary on Monday approved diverting capital assistance funds to the agency.

After a letter from SEPTA’s general manager on Friday requesting flexibility to use capital funds for daily operations, Gov. Josh Shapiro directed PennDOT to approve this request which will help cover two years of operating expenses.

The move comes amid a two-month budget impasse and weeks of protests and clashes among lawmakers, highlighting a compromise from the state’s Democrats.
