NEW ORLEANS — Attorneys representing victims of clergy sexual abuse who were urging their clients to oppose a proposed settlement with the Archdiocese of New Orleans say they’re now ready to back the deal after the church was able to guarantee $230 million.
A previous deal announced in May could only guarantee $180 million with the possibility of $230 million if the church could sell its affiliated Christopher Homes apartment complexes.
The church’s largest insurer, Travelers, for now is still holding out against a settlement. However, WWL Louisiana and reporting partner the Guardian understand that the insurer is in active talks to contribute an amount of money that could substantially increase the worth of the proposed settlement.
Either way, Monday’s higher offer was a long-rumored m
