The man found living in the crawl space was arrested and charged with burglary and unlawful possession of methamphetamine, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

Oregon authorities arrested a man they allege was living in a crawl space in a condo complex where he wasn't a resident.

Beniamin Bucur, 40, was taken into custody on burglary in the first degree and unlawful possession of methamphetamine charges on Wednesday, Sept. 3, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office. Clackamas is about 16 miles south of Portland.

Deputies responded to a report from a witness who claimed the man was spotted walking to the back of one of the complex buildings.

"The witness also noticed the door to the crawl space was open, and light was coming from inside. The door then closed," officials said in a news release.

When deputies got to the scene, they found the crawl space door to be locked and damaged. They reached out to the owner, who confirmed that nobody was supposed to be in the area. However, officials said the owner described hearing strange noises.

Household items were found in the crawl space, authorities say

The deputies tried to use keys provided by the owner, but when that failed, they breached the door, the sheriff's office said.

The man, officials claimed, had "taken significant steps to improve the conditions of the crawl space and was obviously living inside." They found televisions, a bed, chargers and other household items.

Officials alleged he squatted there for an extended period but did not confirm an exact timeline. Deputies also said they found white residue in a pipe, which tested positive for meth.

Jail records reviewed by USA TODAY on Monday, Sept. 8, show that Bucur is still in custody. The sheriff's office said he stood before a judge last week and was given a $75,000 bail.

It was not immediately clear if Bucor has legal representation. USA TODAY has reached out for additional information.
