EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEVV) — Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Gardens is grieving the loss of their beloved Mueller’s grey gibbon, Berta.
Zoo officials shared the passing on Monday , saying Berta’s appetite had recently decreased and she was no longer participating in daily activities that she used to enjoy.
After a rapid and irreversible health decline, officials say Berta was humanely euthanized.
According to the zoo, Berta was the oldest known Mueller’s grey gibbon in the United States. She celebrated her 59th birthday in July with a “cake,” special enrichment, and a happy birthday song from Camp Zoofari kids.
Berta arrived at the zoo in 2001 with her partner, Freddy, who passed away in 2015, according to the zoo.
