Prime Minister Mark Carney was in St. John’s today, announcing $80-million in supports for small- and medium-sized businesses in Atlantic Canada affected by U.S. tariffs.

The funding comes from a $1-billion support program disclosed last week.

It will flow through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and is meant to help businesses expand into new markets and strengthen supply chains.

Also today, Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said Quebec’s aluminum sector is likely to receive “hundreds of millions of dollars” from a separate $5-billion fund to help sectors hit hard by U.S. tariffs.

Nearly all of Canada’s aluminum is produced in Quebec.
