A section of Meadowlark Trail near Superior is closed again this year through October for public safety to allow for cattle grazing.
According to Boulder County Parks and Open Space officials, the decision to close the trail for cattle grazing was made in 2023.
“In most cases, it is not a problem to keep trails open during grazing. However, the herd grazing the Meadowlark Trail area is known to be particularly aggressive and protective of their young,” Erin Maier, the county’s grazing lands specialist, said in an email. “In 2023 a jogger was attacked and seriously injured and others were charged by the cows, so we determined the closure is necessary for public safety.”
Many cows can be fearful of humans and protective of their young, especially before a calf is weaned and foraging on it
