OGDENSBURG, New York (WWNY) - After prison strikes earlier this year, the state stopped letting inmates get legal mail directly given to them, determining it was a way people could impersonate attorneys and get drugs behind the walls.
Currently, legal mail is scanned and given to inmates.
“The legal mail scan. It has helped it, but if you want to 100 percent stop it, make it electronic,” said Bryan Hluska, Vice President of the NYS Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association Central Region.
Two North County lawmakers are proposing new legislation that would require the state prison system to create a secure digital platform for legal mail, ending physical legal mail altogether.
