Pets and their owners in Macomb County now have an added layer of protection to ensure they don't become separated from one another.

Officials on Monday announced what they said is Metro Detroit's first public microchip scanning stations. At four locations around the county, people who find a stray can quickly scan the animal to find information to reunite them with their owner. The first station is already online at the Clinton Township police facility, with locations in Armada, Roseville and Shelby Township to follow.

Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel said the program, funded by an almost $1,400 state grant, is the first of its kind in Metro Detroit.
