NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — New Haven police announced they made an arrest in connection to a double homicide on Dickerman Street last month.

Sergio Thomas, 39, of New Haven, was arrested in Waterbury on Friday.

Shots were fired after some sort of altercation involving the suspect's brother, according to police.

Thomas's defense attorney said he was defending his brother, who he claims feared for his life.

"We are learning now Sergio's brother was dating one of the victim's sister and there was some issue in their dating relationship," defense attorney Darnell D. Crosland said.

Police said there was some kind of fight that first started a couple of streets over.

"And one of the individuals had tried to stab him. We have recovered the shirt that has evidence of the stab," said Crosland.
