Decatur advocates said at least 100 votes were not counted in the recent mayoral election, while people received incomplete ballots.
Now, they are suing the City of Decatur to conduct a new mayoral election.
Retired businessman Kent Lawrence won the Aug. 26 election with 54% of the vote. A runoff would have been required if Lawrence had received less than 50%, roughly 200 ballots.
City councilmember Billy Jackson received 42% of the vote.
“Butch” Matthews and Suzie Wiley also ran for mayor. They received less than 2% of the vote. A group of concerned citizens said Matthews and Wiley’s names were left off several ballots.
