NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) The Ten Mile community has taken another step forward in protecting their historic lands and it could set a precedent for other historical settlements in the Lowcountry.

Charleston County’s Planning Commision has recommended an overlay district for the community that will provide custom regulations for the area

The Ten Mile community started out as an African American settlement nearly 200 years ago and has kept much of its unique culture and history alive. With development encroaching, community members asked the Charleston County Council for a plan to protect their land from uncharacteristic overdevelopment.
