A senior Liberal has defended Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price as an "authentic person", as she faces increasing pressure from both sides of politics to apologise for her comments on Indian migrants.

Deputy Opposition Leader Ted O'Brien did not indicate whether Senator Nampijinpa Price should publicly apologise for claiming the government was bringing in more Indian migrants because they vote Labor.

However, he said she understood the value of the community group to Australia.

"Jacinta is absolutely an authentic person - she has already said that she wishes to clarify and correct what she said about the Australian Indian community, and she's done that," he told Nine's Today program on Tuesday.
