FAYETTE, Ala. (WIAT) -- Andy Hamlin, who serves as the district attorney for Fayette County, recused himself Monday from the prosecution of convicted sex offender Timothy Benton.
Benton was released from prison into his parents' house under house arrest by judge Samuel Junkin in June after serving five and a half years of a 17-year sentence.
That decision has caused protests in Fayette and left families of Benton's victims outraged. Hamlin cited a conflict of interest for why he recused himself from the case.
It's unclear what the conflict of interest is. Hamlin requested the Alabama Attorney General's Office to take over the case.
