Now that Prime Minster Mark Carney has delayed the government’s 2026 mandate on zero-emission vehicles, he should scrap its 2026 and 2030 targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Ideally, he should kill the 2035 and 2050 targets as well, but that’s probably asking too much.

Given that the Liberals are soon to release their “climate competitiveness” policy, we can only hope the recent reluctance of Carney and Industry Minister Melanie Joly to commit to Canada’s 2030 target means the Liberals are coming to their senses.

That’s because hitting the Justin Trudeau-era targets of reducing Canada’s emissions to 20% below 2005 levels by next year, 40% in 2030, 45% in 2035 and net-zero in 2050 will devastate our economy.
