MORGAN COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — Several deadly police chases across North Alabama over the last couple of years pose the question, 'When is an officer justified in pursuing a chase?'
Tim Gann, the Chief Deputy at the Madison County District Attorney's Office, says that the answer lies within the specific police department's chase policy.
"Police departments have specific policies, and there's not one blanket policy that covers all police departments," Gann said. "They have probable cause that a crime has been committed before they start a pursuit. And, at that point, if it gets too dangerous, the officer has every right to stop it. But we want our officers to try and take dangerous people off the road."
