Few NFL jobs are so quietly pressure-packed as the kicker’s. For the San Francisco 49ers , that spotlight has fallen painfully white on Jake Moody . The kicker who once was thought of as the long-term solution now sits at the top of debate that pours out of the locker room and onto the coaching staff. And while head coach Kyle Shanahan has been down playing it for a long time, his most recent words reveal a more complex truth.

He spoke following the 49ers 17-13 win against the Seattle Seahawks. His words suggested Moody’s roster position is being under close examination. “There are options, whether it’s to stay status quo, we could bring in guys for workouts, practice squad … I know the personnel department is going to look into all that stuff and give us those options.” Shanahan
