A woman in Idaho landed a flathead catfish that was a catch-and-release state record previously held by her husband, but she had initially thought about not submitting it for record consideration.

While night fishing with her husband on the Snake River on August 2, Brandi Holt of Homedale caught a 44-inch flathead catfish.

“I was hesitant to even submit the record,” Holt told Idaho Fish and Game. “My husband puts in so much time and effort all year trying to beat his own personal best, and it was really his encouragement that convinced me to go ahead and send it in.”

Brandi’s fish was bigger than husband Jared’s fish by 2 inches. He caught the 42-inch flathead catfish on Sept. 6, 2020, also in the Snake River. The previous record was 38.5 inches in 2018 by Scott Turner.

“Flathead catfish can be found in the Snake River and associated reservoirs in southwest Idaho,” Idaho Fish and Game reported. “They are typically found in the Snake River between C.J. Strike and Brownlee reservoirs, but their numbers are higher in the river sections closer to Brownlee Reservoir…

“While they are not as common as channel catfish, they can reach some surprising sizes, making them a great trophy opportunity. Idaho’s largest flathead catfish was caught in 1994 from Brownlee Reservoir, weighing in at 58.4 pounds and stretching to 48 inches.”
