Kenon Hagwood stood in the forming line in front of Harrison Auditorium on the NC A&T campus Thursday afternoon to pay his respect to a man who he learned about in history books.

The N.C. A&T sophomore from Charlotte chose A&T because of Maj. General Joseph McNeil of the Greensboro Four, who died last week at the age of 83.

“He has earned the respect,” Hagwood said.

McCain arrived at A&T from Wilmington in 1959 on a full scholarship and is being remembered for helping erase Jim Crow-era practices throughout the South.

On the cover of his obituary are the words "A lifetime of Courage."

Bishop William Barber, who is to give the eulogy, was seen on campus earlier today.
