South Australia has landed a landmark deal, signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with British defence heavyweight Rolls-Royce that puts the state firmly at the front of Australia’s AUKUS ambitions.
The agreement, sealed in London at the Defence and Security Equipment International event, is focused on boosting local skills and tech capability to meet the needs of the next generation of nuclear-powered submarines.
The MOU is designed to grow and train a workforce ready for Australia’s conventionally armed nuclear subs. Partnering with Rolls-Royce is significant, the company has been powering the Royal Navy’s nuclear submarines for more than 60 years and is now expanding its facilities to meet demand from both the UK and Australia.
