RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - The Virginia War Memorial’s Shrine of Memory provides a peaceful backdrop for dozens to honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost during the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
During the Commonwealth’s Patriot Day Ceremony, a memorial bell tolls three times, encouraging everyone to pause and remember one of America’s darkest days.
“There was a lot of people that just didn’t know that their lives were going to change that day,” said Helen Lamberta, who attended Thursday’s ceremony.
Lamberta remembers the horror her family went through on this tragic day 24 years ago.
“I had a cousin who worked on the 80th floor,” she said. “He got out okay, but a lot of people in his company did not.”
