DANVILLE, Ky. — The future of public charter schools in Kentucky is up for discussion once again. On Thursday, the Kentucky Supreme Court heard oral arguments on a case that will determine whether that type of educational system is constitutional. Arguments were heard at Centre College in Danville.

This stems from a bill passed by the state legislature back in 2022. House Bill 9 narrowly became law and was almost immediately challenged. In 2023, a Franklin County circuit judge ruled against the bill.

The state’s attorney general’s office argued in favor of the legislation, saying a public charter school system can legally operate. It’s a viewpoint that would change the landscape of education in Kentucky and could affect per-student funding at public schools.
