An 18-year-old woman is lucky to be alive after she was impaled by a piece of flying rebar pipe while in the passenger seat of a vehicle travelling on a Utah highway earlier this week.

According to Utah Highway Patrol, the incident occurred Monday afternoon on U.S. 189 when a piece of flying rebar crashed into a car, reports KSL.com .

Police said the vehicle was travelling north when the metal rod, used in construction, came over the concrete barrier, hit the hood of the car and went through the windshield, pinning the victim to her seat.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene to free the woman while the highway was closed to traffic both ways to allow a medical helicopter to land.
