ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Naval Academy in Annapolis is on lockdown after shots were reportedly fired on campus, according to sources.

Multiple sources inside the U.S. Naval Academy tell Fox News that the lockdown happened after a midshipman who had been kicked out of the school returned to campus armed with a weapon.

What we know:

Reports about the lockdown began to come in around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Sources say gunshots were heard inside Bancroft Hall, which houses the midshipmen.

In a statement, the U.S. Academy Public Affairs Office said, "Naval Support Activity Annapolis, in coordination with local law enforcement, is currently responding to reports of threats made to the Naval Academy.
