SARASOTA, Fla. ( WWSB ) - Emergency personnel, community members, and visitors attended one of the many Suncoast remembrance ceremonies for 9/11.

A solemn ceremony was held at the new Emergency Services Fire Administration building. Former County Commissioner Carolyn Mason, who was mayor on Sept. 11, 2001, delivered the keynote address.

Mason recalled greeting President George W. Bush at Sarasota Bradenton International Airport the day before the attacks, presenting him with the key to the city. She described the pride of watching Air Force One land, the shock of the next morning, and the urgency she felt to gather the community in prayer.

“This is the day the Lord made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it,” Mason told the audience. She urged residents to love and respect first responder
