MUSKEGON, MI - A portion of the pier leading to Muskegon’s southern lighthouse will close next week.

Renovations will begin Tuesday, Sept. 16, on the Muskegon South Breakwater Lighthouse, a press release from the Michigan Lighthouse Conservancy states.

The pier leading out to the lighthouse will be closed at its halfway point to give crews room to work.

The $1.6 million project will be done by Mihm Enterprises, a lighthouse restoration company based in Hamilton.

The first phase of the project begins this month with restoring the structure to ensure winter ice and weather do not cause further damage. The first phase is covered by an $800,000 state grant.

An additional $800,000 is still needed to fund the second phase of the project.
