The Blue Jays leapfrogged over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday to regain the best record in the American League following a remarkable performance by Toronto starter Kevin Gausman.

The Jays ace threw a two-hit, complete-game shutout as Toronto defeated the Houston Astros 6-0.

Meanwhile, the Yankees kept pace with the Jays with their 9-3 win over Detroit. With just 16 games left in the season, Toronto has a 78.6 per cent chance of winning the division, according to FanGraphs .

“The division hasn’t been wrapped up quite yet, but the banner is within sight,” the Star’s baseball columnist Gregor Chisholm wrote. “And with just over two weeks left to play in the regular season, Gausman is one of the main reasons why.”
