On the first day of the Kalispell Invitational golf tournament, the boys went very low.

Led by a 7-under 63 from Helena Capital’s John Gilbert, six boys broke par in the par-70 layout at Northern Pines Golf Club Wednesday.

Gilbert shot a 29 on the front, with an eagle on No. 7 and three birdies; he then wrapped two birdies on the back around a solitary bogey.

He has a three-stroke lead over a quartet of excellent players: Joseph Meusey of Missoula Sentinel, Glacier’s Luke Nelson and Torren Murray and Max Milton of Polson.

Jack Schaefer of Sentinel came in at 2-under 66; he and Meusey have helped Sentinel lead the event after 18 holes. The Spartans, with Hudson Goroski shooting 70, are 2-under 278 as a team.
