HUNTINGTON — West Virginia took home the win in its first women's soccer matchup with Marshall in Huntington since 1999 on Thursday, 2-0.
The Mountaineers (5-2) secured an Olimpico from Maya Leoni on a corner kick late in the first half before Ajanae Respass added insurance on a breakaway in the final three minutes.
Leoni’s shot scored directly from a corner kick. Marshall’s Emma Durand defended the near post, where the ball flew. Durand caught the ball, but it slipped from her gloves and went into the back of the net. Leoni did a double somersault in celebration of the rare feat.
“We’ll take it,” WVU coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “Maya is very technical. She does it well.”
WVU has not conceded a goal in more than 400 game minutes, dating back to a Penn State tally in a 3-1 Mountaineers
