The Morgantown interchange (Exit 298) of the Pennsylvania Turnpike will be closed in both directions Sunday morning from midnight to 6 a.m. Crews will be removing the overhead toll gantry at the interchange as part of the toll booth demolition process for Open Road Tolling, or ORT.
Turnpike officials said that during the closure, drivers should go to the next exit and find an alternative route.
Open Road Tolling is a cashless system without traditional toll plazas or booths. In an ORT system, tolls are charged electronically as customers drive at highway speeds without slowing down or stopping beneath overhead structures — called gantries — between interchanges.
Now that ORT is live east of Reading and on the Northeast Extension, toll plazas are being removed from the interchanges there
