September enrolment was below expectations at some Kelowna-area elementary schools, trustees heard this week.

And for the first time in many years, a “contingency plan” is being developed in case the total number of students attending Central Okanagan schools drops below last year’s levels.

Going into this academic year, administrators had been projecting a slight increase, of just 150 students. Last year, there were approximately 25,000 students in Kelowna area public schools.

“Preliminary indicators are showing student enrolment lower than projected in some elementary schools,” reads part of a report from district superintendent Jon Rever that was presented to trustees at Wednesday’s board meeting.
