As part of our 70th anniversary , KCRA 3 is taking a look through our archives at various community stories we covered over the decades.

One longtime event that used to take place in Folsom was called the Great Snail Race.

The video above shows KCRA 3's report from the second iteration of the race in September 1982. As our reporter noted then, the race was sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and was aimed at raising money for a sports complex.

Snail handlers tried various tricks to increase the speed of their competitor like blowing on them. One man talked about feeding his racing snail beer. Another bejeweled his snail so its shell shined.

Former Congressman Vic Fazio, who died in 2022, was among the competitors.
