American electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian is recalling more than 24,000 vehicles because of a defect with hands-free highway assist, federal safety regulators said.

In a Sept. 12, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration wrote the recall covered 24,214 new-model Rivian vehicles in the United States running an older software version.

The automaker identified the problem after an incident involving a 2025 R1S model where the vehicle's system "misclassified a low-speed vehicle" and its driver failed to maintain control, NHTSA reported.

A low speed (6 mph) collision with the vehicle in front of the driver occurred, but NHTSA said no injuries were reported in the crash.

Here's what you need to know about the vehicle recall published by the NHTSA.
