The Consul of Mexico will lead one of several city events celebrating the 215th anniversary of Mexico’s Independence this weekend. Last year’s event drew over 9,900 attendees, and this year promises to draw more with a broader array of activities, performances, and community engagement.
The biggest Mexican holiday, known as 16 de septiembre, commemorates the date in 1810 when the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla urged Mexicans to rise against the Spanish colonial government. The call, known as El Grito de Dolores, or the Cry of Dolores, is named after the town of Dolores, Mexico, where the cry originated.
"The Grito ceremony is a symbol of identity for the Paso del Norte region and an opportunity to strengthen the ties of friendship between Mexico and the United States," said Mauricio Ib
