(Reuters) - Nasdaq on Friday fired an employee for social media posts related to conservative influencer Charlie Kirk's shooting, saying they were in clear violation of its policy.

Kirk, an influential ally of President Donald Trump, was fatally shot on Wednesday while speaking at a Utah university.

"Nasdaq has a zero-tolerance policy toward violence and any commentary that condones or celebrates violence," the company said in a post on X.

The employee was a woman who worked as a junior-level sustainability strategist at Nasdaq, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters, without disclosing further details.

Kirk had 5.3 million followers on X and hosted a popular podcast and radio program, "The Charlie Kirk Show." He had also recently appeared as a guest co-host on Fox News' "Fox & Friends."

His killing has sparked outrage on the far right, with supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump pointing to posts that appear to celebrate Kirk's death as evidence of conservatives increasingly being targeted.
