Representative Brad Sherman, a California Democrat, slammed the detention of Sharareh Moghaddam , a green card holder, calling it "outrageous" in comments to a local outlet.

"You know, the whole idea of deporting somebody with a green card because they've had very minor legal problems is outrageous," Sherman said in comments to CBS News Los Angeles . "It robs the country of a future citizen that we have decided that we want to be a citizen. That's why they were issued a green card."

Sherman sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security calling for Moghaddam's release.

"I urge the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to support her immediate release from detention. Nothing in her background suggests Ms. Moghaddam is a 'danger' or 'flight risk,'" Sherman said in the letter o
