GREER, S.C. (WSPA) -- All students and staff were safe inside Greer High School Friday afternoon, after a possibly armed individual was reported to be near the school.

Principal Andrew Baker said the school was placed on secure status while police officers investigated the reports.

According to city leaders, there was a report of a person carrying a long rifle who was walking near the intersection of Gap Creek Road and Country Club Road after 2 p.m.

Law enforcement cleared the high school to proceed with a controlled dismissal, officials said.

Police officers are monitoring the area and are escorting students to their cars and buses.

"This may cause delays with dismissal, but we appreciate your patience and understanding," Principal Baker added.
