MADISON (WKOW) -- The UW-Madison Police Department is investigating what university officials are calling a "significant incident" of vandalism on campus.

Several parts of Library Mall, including the Hagenah Fountain, were vandalized with red paint, according to a post on the university's website . It happened in the early morning hours on Friday.

The vandal or vandals also used red paint across the front of Bascom Hall in the area around the statue of Abraham Lincoln, the stairs and the front doors.

UW officials said flyers were also affixed to Bascom Hall.

Crews from Facilities Planning & Management were brought in to clean and restore the areas as quickly as possible.
