On Sept. 7, beachgoers in the San Francisco Bay Area encountered a rare hoodwinker sunfish on the shore

The hoodwinker sunfish, or Mola tecta, can weigh as much as 4,400 pounds and can grow up to nine feet long

"It was so enormous and so weird and gorgeous. It's like suddenly you're on another planet," one bystander said

Beachgoers in the San Francisco Bay Area were in for a surprise over the weekend when they discovered a massive, rare fish lying on the shore.

According to the Press Democrat , a Santa Rosa, Calif. resident, Stefan Kiesbye, headed to Doran Regional Park on Bodega Bay to pick up trash on Sunday, Sept. 7. At first, nothing on the beach seemed out of the ordinary, as sea lions were barking nearby and the waves hit the sand.
